How to Select Healthy Areca Seedlings
What to look for in an areca seedling before you buy, and why a good start matters for a crop that lasts for decades.

An areca plantation stays productive for decades, so the few minutes you spend choosing seedlings is one of the best investments you can make.
Age and size
Most growers plant seedlings that are around 12 to 18 months old. By then the plant usually has five or more leaves and a root system that can cope with transplanting.
Signs of a healthy seedling
- Five or more healthy leaves, green and free from spots or burning
- A short, thick collar at the base of the stem. A thick collar is one of the best signs of vigour.
- An undamaged growing point (the spear leaf in the centre)
- An intact polybag with the soil ball firm around the roots
What to avoid
- Tall, thin, pale seedlings that have been crowded in the nursery
- Plants with yellowing, rotting or damaged spear leaves
- Seedlings with broken polybags or exposed, dried roots
Uniform plants for a uniform plantation
If you are planting a new block, try to choose seedlings of similar size. Uniform plants grow at a similar pace, which makes shading, irrigation and later management easier.
Ask to see them
A good nursery will let you see the plants or send current photos before you buy. At Pranavi Areca Nursery we are happy to do both.
