Growing Avocado in Kodagu: A Beginner's Guide
Avocado is a growing favourite in Kodagu. Drainage, spacing and early care make the biggest difference.

Avocado, often called butter fruit, is increasingly planted in Kodagu, both on its own and alongside coffee and areca.
Drainage comes first
Avocado roots are very sensitive to standing water, which invites root rot. Choose a well-drained spot, or plant on a raised mound if your soil holds water.
Grafted or seedling?
Grafted plants usually begin fruiting earlier, often in about 3 to 4 years, and produce fruit true to the parent variety. Seedling trees take longer and fruit type can vary.
Spacing
Allow 6 m to 8 m between trees for most varieties. Closer spacing is possible with regular pruning.
Planting and early care
- Dig a wide pit and mix the soil with compost.
- Plant at the same depth as in the nursery bag.
- Water well, then mulch thickly, keeping mulch a little away from the stem.
- Protect young plants from strong wind and harsh sun for the first months.
- Water regularly in the dry season, but never keep the soil soggy.
