Chandragiri Coffee: Planting and Early Care

Chandragiri is an arabica coffee selection released by the Central Coffee Research Institute. It forms a compact, semi-dwarf bush, which lets you plant a little closer and makes picking easier.

Shade first

Coffee in Kodagu is grown under shade. Before planting, make sure you have a two-tier shade canopy, tall trees above and a lower tier, so young plants are protected from direct afternoon sun. New plots without shade should be planted only after temporary shade is arranged.

When to plant

Plant at the start of the monsoon, usually June to July, when the soil is moist and rain is steady. This gives the young plant a full wet season to settle before the first dry months.

Spacing

For semi-dwarf arabica such as Chandragiri, a spacing of about 1.8 m × 1.8 m is common, though the right spacing depends on your slope, shade and soil. Discuss it before you plant.

Pits

Dig pits of about 45 × 45 × 45 cm ahead of the rains and fill them with topsoil mixed with compost or well-rotted manure.

The first year

• Keep the basin weed-free and mulch it to hold moisture.
• Protect the young plant from strong sun until the shade fills in.
• Water in the first dry season if rain is delayed.

Handling and picking

A healthy Chandragiri plant starts bearing from about the third year. Pick only the ripe, red cherries for the best price and cup quality.
